DEFINITION AND MEANING OF DOMAIN NAMES

What did you really understand by DOMAIN?

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is any name that you can point to a server. Thus! google.com, yahoo.comebay.com are all examples of domain names.
* A Domain name can also be called a website address after it has been pointed to a server. e.g. www.google.com is an example of a domain name that has been pointed to a server.
Also, a domain name can
be said to be an identification string that defines a series of administrative autonomy, authority or control on the server (Internet). Domain names are guided by some rules, regulations, policies terms and procedures.
Some of the rules and procedures domain names are guided by are:

Domain Name System
Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical distributed naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the world wide web (Internet) or a private network. Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name. Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-specific naming and addressing purposes. In general, a domain name represents, connects, links and associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. Most importantly, it translates easily memorized domain names  to the numerical IP addresses needed for the purpose of locating computer services and devices worldwide.

IP Addresses
An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. This  address can serves two principal functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing. Thus! Its function has been characterized into two main places as follows: "A name that indicates what we are looking for. Then an address that tells  where we can find it.And a route that indicates how to get there."
 DNS root
The DNS root zone is the top-level Domain Name System (DNS) zone in the hierarchical namespace of the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet.
Domain names are organized in subordinate levels (subdomains) of the  domain, which is nameless. The first-level set of domain names are the top-level domains (TLDs), including the generic top-level domains (gTLDs), such as the prominent domains like .com, .info, .net, .edu, and .org, and also the country code top-level domains (ccTLDs). Below these top-level domains in the DNS hierarchy are the second-level and third-level domain names that are typically open for reservation by end-users who wish to connect local area networks to the Internet, create other publicly accessible Internet resources or run web sites.
 Domain Name Registars
Domain name registrars are companies accredited by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) that offers registration services for the domain names of organizations and individuals. The registration of these domain names is usually administered by domain name registrars who sell their services to the public.

Generic Names Or Brand Name Domains?

I know that a number of people seem to think that your domain name really must be some generic name like "cars.com" if you are selling cars. Witness, for example, how much money those generic names are being sold for. But seriously, if you were looking for a car, you'll probably already have some brands in mind, and you're more like to try out things like generalmotors.com or toyota.com rather than just cars.com. For that reason, I personally feel that a domain name that matches your brand name is very important. The very name that you use to advertise your product is the name that you will want for your domain, because that is the first thing that people will try in their browser. It is also the easiest thing for them to remember, and whatever that is easily remembered, will be more likely to be tried out than the obscure domain name..... http://www.googlegister.com
